Narrow Stance for Longer Drives: The Secret to Unlocking Power and Precision

In golf, most players instinctively go for a wider stance when swinging with their driver, assuming it gives them more power. However, this common mistake could be limiting both your distance and accuracy. A recent lesson reveals how a narrower stance can unlock smoother, more consistent drives by enhancing balance and hip movement.

Why a Wide Stance Isn’t Ideal

When your stance is too wide, it restricts hip movement and can lock you into a rigid position. This lack of flexibility makes it harder to push off the ground and transfer energy efficiently through the swing. It also increases the chance of an “over-the-top” move, where your swing becomes misaligned.

The Narrow Stance Drill

The key to success is learning to narrow your stance and flare the left foot slightly. Here’s how:

  1. Start Narrow: Align your feet about a club-head width apart with the ball in the center. This narrower setup keeps your swing more on-plane.
  2. Flare the Left Foot: Pointing your left toe outward allows for better hip rotation and makes it easier to follow through the shot.
  3. Adjust Gradually: As you practice, try increasing to 1.5 to 2 club-head widths apart, with the ball just inside your left heel. This slight adjustment helps you recalibrate your swing without sacrificing precision.

The Benefits of a Narrow Stance

  • Better Control: With less room for error, a narrow stance ensures you swing on the correct plane.
  • Improved Hip Rotation: A flared left foot allows for greater movement, adding both power and consistency to your swing.
  • Balanced Power: Narrowing your stance helps avoid the false sense of power that a wide stance can create.

By practicing with this setup, you’ll hit longer, straighter drives more consistently.

Stay swift, play better.
